Our Vision
At Watershed Networks we are constantly learning and questioning assumptions.
The story of today's changing workplace is as much about culture as technology. The telephone network reshaped the world many years ago. It's easy now to forget what it once meant to be able to speak to someone in real-time across the state or across the country or across the world. Can you imagine collaborating on a product in 1909 with one engineer in Detroit, one in Beijing and one in Bangalore? What about distance learning?
The telecommunications industry is in the midst of a sea change, and its effect on our work-culture, on our personal lives and on the way we think about our world may be more profound than that of the introduction of the telephone.
Lifetime employees are rare these days. Companies are very different than they were a generation or two ago. Skilled workers are driven by interesting and challenging projects. Employment is a chance to contribute, grow and achieve with a team. When the job is done, if not suitably challenged, these skilled techs and engineers move on. And the pace of change is so rapid, every project faces a new world of challenges and capabilities.
Successful companies attract intelligent and committed people to contribute to the effort. Successful managers make sure that these people contribute to the knowledge base of the company, that they create an environment that cultivates talent, that people say "that's a smart company", not "that's a company with a few smart people".
We envision and design systems to enable companies to gather information, insight, and knowledge as smart people move through your organization. We believe that education must be a constant part of the work environment and that education is not just teacher-to-student, but peer-to-peer and employee-to-manager. Imagine if an entire department of your company all quit on the same day, and the next day you hired the same number of equally talented, capable people. What would be missing? What would the new team lack that the old team possessed? That body of knowledge is what your company needs to capture.
Information from meetings, conversations, notes, messages, and formal presentations add to the company's knowledgebase. That information could be archived and available long after each employee leaves the company or is transitioned to another assignment. We envision sophisticated learning tools which will combine every manner of communication with a thorough base of fundamental knowledge. We envision a learning process that is an integral part of every employee's method as problems are solved and tasks are accomplished every day.
